How to Make an SPC c Chart in Excel Transcript
I'd like to take a minute and show you how to make a statistical control chart and using the Excel OM software.
So if I go to my tab for Excel OM, you should already have installed on your computer, I can look it up either by chapter in the book or alphabetically. In this case, I'm going to be looking for a quality control chart and we're going to be using the c Chart for this exercise. And let's say I have five days’ worth of data or five samples or five weeks' worth of data. You can put a title here if you want. And let's go ahead and make sure that the graph button is checked. Select OK.
All right, it's going to give me the number of sample errors. So say the first... First, we'll use weeks. Saying Week 1, I had 10 errors that week. Maybe the next week I had seven errors, the next one four, and then seven errors, and six errors. And say that my company really wants to have a very tightly controlled error rate. So maybe I would change my standard deviation to two here.
So this produces my c Chart. And as you can see, everything is within control because you're within the upper and lower control limits. So I hope this helps.

How to Make a Histogram and a Pareto Chart in Excel Transcript
I'd like to take you real quickly on the process of how to build a histogram and a Pareto chart in Excel.
So to build a histogram, because we're going to want to look over the number of weeks, here's my data, I have the number of weeks here and I have the errors on the left-hand column there. But on a histogram, I want to see my error rate over the days of the week or in this case, the week itself. So if I select the first week and push control and then select my total errors, I've selected my... just my total numbers. And then what you don't want to do here is you do not want to use the histogram button here. This doesn't produce the right chart that we're looking for here. So you're looking at clicking this button and picking a 2D column like so and this will show you the error rates over the days or the weeks.
And then for a histogram, typically there's no empty space. So if you select here and double-click on one of the column bars, you can close your gap width and that will show you how to produce a histogram.
A Pareto chart is very similar. Delete this. Except for Pareto chart, I'm going to be looking at the total defects. So again, I select about type. There's my types of defects I've selected. Again, hold the control button and highlight my total column. And then it's much easier here because if you get this little button here under insert, now I can insert my Pareto chart. And voila, there it is. You can click on here. You can change the title if you want. And make any other sort of adjustments you need there.
