When using REBT and behavioral theories, I think it’s really important to consider how culture shapes beliefs and behavior. With REBT, the idea of challenging “irrational beliefs” can be complicated. What may seem irrational from a Western perspective might actually reflect deeply rooted cultural, religious, or family values. If we challenge those beliefs too quickly, we risk invalidating a client’s identity instead of helping them grow (Corey, 2021). I also think about how REBT can feel very direct or confrontational, which may not align with cultures that value indirect communication or respect for authority. With behavioral approaches, diversity shows up in what reinforces behavior. Reinforcers are not universal what motivates one client may not motivate another. We also can’t ignore systemic factors like discrimination or socioeconomic stressors. Behavior doesn’t exist in isolation. For me, both approaches require cultural humility and flexibility. We have to make sure we’re not labeling something as “irrational” or “maladaptive” just because it doesn’t align with dominant cultural norms.
