Think Piece
Post-Tiananmen (1989) China is built in many ways on a ‘bargain’. This isn’t a bargain where both parties (the people and the government in this case) agree: in fact, the Chinese people were not even asked. But clearly, the Chinese Communist Party is trying to assuage some of the Chinese people and to prevent more protests.
Is the Chinese bargain sustainable? Considering what we know from modernization theory, can China increasingly become capitalist while remaining a totally authoritarian regime? Please provide evidence for you answer. Finally, does China present a new model for other states? Perhaps modern China is a model distinct from the United States and Western liberal democracy.
