Are playscripts Literature?

In chapter four Barranger highlights the work of many playwrights that primarily focus on specific social or ethnic groups. In general, do you think that plays should deal with these narrower issues or should playwrights strive to focus on the larger issues of the human condition, disregarding social or economic concerns?
