The Technological Rise of Browser-Based Gaming

As part of our Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) coursework on digital entertainment patterns, this survey examines why contemporary users increasingly favor browser-based games over traditional offline installations. Our findings highlight a structural paradigm shift driven by modern web architectures and zero-friction accessibility.

Technologically, the maturation of WebAssembly (Wasm), WebGL, and optimized JavaScript engines has narrowed the performance gap for casual and mid-tier titles. Unlike offline games that require local disk space, hardware compatibility checks, manual updates, and administrative privileges,  free online games execute instantly inside standard web sandboxes. A player can transition from discovering a URL to active gameplay within seconds across Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS without taxing host hardware resources.

Furthermore, client-side caching and automated cloud-state persistence provide an uninterrupted cross-platform experience. Gamers today value low latency, instant gratification, and minimal system overhead. By decoupling gaming from hardware-bound downloads and continuous patching cycles, the web browser transforms casual interactive media into lightweight, on-demand micro-services, rendering offline standalone clients increasingly redundant for day-to-day play.
