Research Paper: Topic Selection Assignment Instructions

Overview

Understanding common social problems found within the human service field is necessary to be effective within one’s chosen career. The Research Paper assignments will allow you to dive deeper in your understanding of a social problem within the human service profession. Examples include poverty, homelessness, child abuse, human trafficking, and domestic violence, to name a few. You will begin your exploration of the topic by finding three current peer-reviewed articles related to your chosen social problem. You will then use information from these sources to support your discussion on why you have chosen this topic.

Instructions

· Provide a 250 – 300-word explanation on why you chose the topic.

· Use APA format (include a title page and a reference page).

· Find three peer-reviewed journal articles related to your topic.

· Peer-reviewed articles need to be current (within the last five years).

· Reference the peer-reviewed articles within the body of your paper and provide a full reference on the reference page.

· Review the Research Paper: Topic Selection Example and the Research Paper: Topic Selection Grading Rubric for additional guidance.

Some databases have the option to select “peer-reviewed” sources; selecting this option will help you eliminate non-scholarly sources from your search results. The Jerry Falwell Library is a reliable place to conduct your searches.

You do not need to pay for articles. Articles that ask you to pay for access can generally be accessed through the Jerry Falwell Library without requiring payment.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Research Paper: Topic Paper Sample

The topic paper is where you will discuss the social problem that you have chosen and provide support for why you believe this is an important subject to cover. The body of your paper will need to include at least 250 words. Focus on communicating your ideas in a professional manner, using a more formal tone (complete sentences, avoid jargon, etc.).

You will cite information from the three required peer-reviewed references to support your discussion. When you cite your source, you will use the last name of the author and the date. For example: Smith (2018) indicated that… or Johnson et al. (2019) found that… If you cite at the end of a sentence it would look like this… (Smith, 2018). Most of the information you use from your sources should be paraphrased (written in your own words). If you use information word for word from your source, you must use quotation marks to avoid plagiarism. You will also include the page number where the quote can be found. For example: “APA papers can be challenging to write, but after some practice it will become second nature” (Smith, 2018, p. 13).

The next page is your reference page. The first reference provides the basic formatting for the articles you will be using. The second and third articles are fictious examples. Notice that articles are in alphabetical order by the first author’s last name. For each source, you will indent each line after the first. Only list sources on the reference page that are used in the body of your paper.
