Throughout this course, we have examined a variety of different dimensions of diversity, how diversity is represented, what role intersectionality and privilege play in creating and maintaining bias and discrimination, and how we learn our “single stories” about diversity. This final project in the course will require you to bring all of these ideas together as you analyze representations of diversity in the media. On the Week 2 Assignment, you identified a fiction book, TV episode, or movie that you have recently read or watched and did an initial analysis of the representations of diversity in it. On the Week 4 Assignment, you identified two scholarly sources to help you extend your analysis of the work you chose. In this assignment, you will build on those two assignments to complete your analysis of diverse representations in your chosen work. For this assignment, you will take as your starting point the conclusion you came to on your Week 2 assignment: does this work provide a positive representation of diversity? You can maintain the position you took at the end of your Week 2 assignment or contradict it. You will then provide evidence from the work and from at least 5 scholarly or credible resources, including the two scholarly sources you identified on your Week 4 assignment (the remainder can be course materials) to support your thesis. Please be sure to do the following: 1. Provide an introduction that includes the author and title of the fiction book, name of episode and name of TV show, or the title of the movie that you chose, as well as a thesis that tells the reader whether you think this work provides a positive representation of diversity. 2. Discuss whether you think the cast of characters in this book, episode, or movie is diverse. To back up your discussion, identify 3 characters from the work and do the following for each: a. Provide a brief (1-paragraph) description of the character, including what they do for a living, relationship status, role in the work (main character, minor character, comic relief, etc.), and anything else you think is important in understanding the character. b. Is the portrayal of the character stereotypical? Why or why not? Provide specific examples from their dialogue or actions. c. Does the character have privilege and in what circumstances? Provide specific examples from their dialogue or actions. d. Is this a positive representation of the group(s) that the character represents? Why or why not? Provide specific examples from their dialogue or actions. 3. Taking a step back, consider who isn’t represented in this work. Do you think this/these groups were left out intentionally? In other words, would it affect the story to include them? 4. If you were the author of this work (i.e., book author, movie creator, TV show writer), how could you improve diversity in this book/TV show/movie? Provide two concrete examples. What implications would these changes have for consumers of this media? 5. Finally, consider why representation of diverse groups is important. Draw on your resources to construct an argument for greater inclusion in the media and in two other areas of life (e.g., the workplace, education, healthcare, government). 6. In your conclusion, reiterate your thesis statement and summarize the main points of your paper.
Essay Formatting: · The essay should be 1000-1500 words long and double-spaced with 1-inch margins. · Use and cite at least 5 resources, including two from your own research. The remainder may be required resources from any of the weeks in this course. You may also use additional scholarly or credible sources. · Use in-text citations in APA (American Psychological Association) style. · Record all source documents cited in a references list at the end of your paper, also in APA format. Follow bibliographic formatting as shown in UMGC's Online Guide to Writing and Research ( https://www.umgc.edu/current-students/learning-resources/writing-center/online-guide-to-writing/index.cfm ) · Be sure to include a cover page with your name, the date, and the assignment topic on your paper. |

Summary
A great movie that I have watched and that I have viewed recently or that I found particularly memorable is the elf 2003. Movie Elf was directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Todd Komarnicki. The movie was first shown in theaters across the United States on October 9, 2003. The narrative centers on the main character, Buddy, a toddler who was accidentally carried to the North Pole. After being transported, Buddy grows up in an elf family, but he knows deep down that he doesn't belong there because his speech does not sound like the other elves'. Despite this, Buddy decides to go on to New York, where he hopes to find his real family. A cynical businessman claims to be Buddy's biological father, so the young man dons his full elf getup and heads to New York to find him. This piece will analyze the film in terms of its primary ideas. After realizing he doesn't belong among the elves, the film's protagonist, Buddy, chooses to leave the North Pole for New York in search of his biological father. This plot point is a clear example of the film's multicultural themes. Along the way, he encounters numerous difficulties as a result of his inexperience with a fusion of cultures. Because of the new alien faith, he feels estranged not only personally, but also socially and publicly. But as he searches for his biological father, who aids him in assimilating to his new culture in whatever way he can, he falls in love with Jovie.
The Cast
The characters in the Elf movie are diverse. It's important to have a more diverse group of people assess films because of the range of perspectives that can be brought to the table. For instance, it differs in the opinion that Buddy is a fully realized human being because he learned to embrace his uniqueness within the context of the Elfin family and grow in the essential cultural and social skills necessary for success. Also, there is a culture of elf which is greatly displayed in the movie. It seems more complicated than just saying whether or not you liked the movie. The more inclusive films grow, the more important it is to hear from the target audience in terms of how they feel about the film. Some people may find it fascinating, while others will find it difficult to follow and even insulting. Critics of race will have more nuanced perspectives when assessing films that intentionally highlight cultural differences. It is maximally diverse because there are different cultures, ethnicity, political beliefs, age, and religion.
How the Characters Are Intersectional
The characters are greatly intersectional since the different races, gender, sexuality, and class, interact and affect each other. For instance, there are certain characteristics that a person needs to have to be a member of the elf community. Nevertheless, Buddy is taken in by the elf community, where he lives happily until he discovers (via gossip) that he is actually a human instead of an elf. Papa Elf tells him that his parents, Walter Hobbs and Susan Wells, are the reason he was born (RAHARDHIKA, 2013). She never told Walter she was pregnant before she gave him up for adoption, and she passed tragically soon afterward. There is no any way that they have privilege. In the film, the importance of family to the elves' decision to not engage in marginalization is highlighted. They agree to raise Buddy despite his differences primarily because of their compassion and acceptance. In addition, Buddy is accepted fully, regardless of his background or culture. The fact that Buddy was allowed to carry on with his search for his biological father in New York City demonstrates how kind and accepting the Elf family was.
If I see Myself
Yes, I see myself in buddy. For want of a better term, Buddy the Elf is the embodiment of naiveté. He's in his thirties now and grew up in the North Pole as one of Santa's helpers. Aware of his uniqueness only after overhearing the other elves discuss him, he initially denies any distinction between himself and the norm. He learns he is human and sets out for New York to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs. Throughout his travels, we see that Buddy, despite his rugged good looks, has the mental and emotional maturity of a young child. Happiness radiates off of Buddy. He maintains a constant grin throughout the film, greeting strangers with enthusiasm and making an impression on everyone he meets (HENRY). Buddy is very lenient and never seems down in the dumps. Since he spent his entire life in the North Pole, Buddy has no idea what things like alcohol, privacy, germs, and nourishment are like in the outside world. This effectively made me like the work since it made me see myself in the movie.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the film Elf offers a wealth of valuable life lessons by providing a wide range of positive representations of diversity among its characters. Specifically, Elves embraced Buddy despite his differences from them, reared him, and treated him like one of their own. This was evident in ways such as acceptance and perseverance. In contrast, Buddy plays a pivotal role by embracing his true identity and being focused on his quest to reunite with his biological family despite his fears that they will reject him if he returns to New York. Because of his optimistic outlook, Buddy was able to maintain his dual cultural identity until he married and moved to New York with his family.

Key findings (200 words) |
This article presents findings from a study that examined the issue of substance use in bi/multiracial youth. The authors suggest that bi/multiracial youth participate in substance use more frequently than monoracial youth. The study had several significant findings. Bi/multiracial youth engaged in higher use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs more so than other youth of color. They also engage in higher levels of marijuana use than white youth. However, findings also revealed that bi/multiracial youth were involved with more psychosocial protectors – such as being raised with a stronger anti-drug message and having parents more involved in their lives. Many also experienced lower levels of psychosocial risk than monoracial youth, such as peer pressure.
The authors suggest several important implications from these findings, especially in terms of designing prevention and intervention efforts aimed at bi/multiracial youth to address substance abuse. These implications take on increased importance as the population of bi/multiracial youth has been increasing significantly over time. They also suggest that these programs focus on enhancing psychosocial protections for these youth, rather than only focusing on protective factors. The authors conclude by mentioning two model programs as being exemplary with this approach – The Strong African American Families Program, and Communities That Care.

My topic is on substance use among adolescents. This article addresses several issues that are relevant to my topic from a psychological viewpoint, including psychosocial protections and risks in the context of substance use. It also discusses a population that has been less focused on in many of the articles I have read. Since the population of bi/multiracial youth is increasing in society, this article will help to ensure that I look at this issue from the perspective of different demographics of youth.
(This description reiterates the topic and fully describes how the article will be relevant from the viewpoint of one of the social sciences. It gives a valid reason of how the article will be useful for the final project. It also meets the required word count). |
