SNHU 107 Week 2

Interruptions can cause big problems with your ability to accomplish tasks effectively and on time. Regardless of how focused you may be, there will always be interruptions to your work. In this discussion, you'll need to identify some of the unplanned events or tasks that might interrupt your schedule. If you haven't experienced many scheduling interruptions, consider how you might if you were balancing family, work, school, and recreation at the same time.

Also, think about how different cultures have different concepts of time and prioritizing time. As you work through this week's discussion, consider how your own culture thinks of time, or how you and a friend, colleague, or instructor view time or prioritize your time differently.

Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.

For your initial post, address the following:

1. Identify what has, usually does, or can interrupt your schedule. 2. Identify which of these interruptions you can prevent and which ones you can't. 3. Discuss how these interruptions have impacted your ability to accomplish tasks

successfully. 4. Consider how you've adjusted your schedule to deal with these interruptions.

For your response posts, address the following:

1. What interruptions did your classmates identify that you may have overlooked in your initial post?

1. What made you initially overlook these interruptions, and how could your classmates' interruptions also interrupt you?

2. Offer some friendly advice on how they could possibly adjust their schedule to get the most out of their time.

Remember, this assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates.

To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric.

Some things that seem to interrupt me from completing work are my animals, work, and my girlfriend. I would say that I could take the extra 30 mins of finishing an assignment instead of playing with the dog. Work and my girlfriend are unpreventable. Noting that I live with my girlfriend, I see her most of the time. Work is also unchangeable because my manager says that I do not need more than two days off. I did change my schedule by adding a day off because before it was only 1 rather than 2. I would say that I've changed my schedule because of instead of sleeping or watching a movie after work, I check on my assignments or emails instead.

Greetings as we head into Week 2!

Interruptions is an interesting topic. On one hand, it is easy to review a “day in the life” and

look back on interruptions and point to things outside my control such as a critical phone call or

business demand that was not expected. These are things that you must simply learn how to

deal with and adjust on the fly to ensure all deliverables are completed. However, there are

likely an equal number of interruptions that are self-started. What I mean by this, is that there

is a distraction that creates the interruption that I might have triggered. It’s easy to see a

notification for an e-mail or text come up and think that you can just quickly respond and get

back to the task at hand. It is a slippery slope. One e-mail can lead to one more and so on. The

other major cause of a schedule interruption is a meeting running late and wreaking havoc on

the rest of a well-planned days.

I employ a few techniques to help control the interruptions that I trigger. First, is working while

my computer is off-line. With no active internet, I do not see notifications and can stay focused

on the work at hand. Second, I try to have my schedule managed to not have any back-to-back

meetings. I will move things to start or end on the quarter hour, building some overflow time in

the schedule. Lastly, when I facilitate a meeting that has risk of running long, I tend to ask

someone to be our timekeeper and someone to be our scribe. Assigning these roles helps to

keep the overall meeting on schedule and we have the benefit of more comprehensive notes.
