Shape Poems!

SHAPE POEMS STUDENT NAME: _______________________________ DATE: _______________ Instructions: Study an artwork and write a short poem about it, then draw the outlines of a distinctive shape within the artwork and fit your poem inside of that shape. STEP 1 - Study an artwork and think about the elements that make up the artwork. Then focus on identifying distinctive shapes. Keeping that shape in mind, write a short poem of any kind (free verse, rhyming couplet, limerick, haiku, etc.) about the artwork, including the subject matter of that distinctive shape. The poem could focus on the subject matter or colors of the artwork, or the story you imagine or the emotions you feel as you study the artwork. STEP 2 - Now, look for distinctive shapes within the painting. On the back of this page, lightly sketch a recognizable outline of a shape from the artwork. Then copy your poem into the shape of the outline, filling the shape from edge to edge and even shaping your letters and words to fit the space. See example below. Then, erase the outline if you wish.
