PROMPT: Oxygen-starved dead zones that cannot sustain life now cover an area roughly the size of the of Oregon. Spanish researchers also recently found that many species die off at oxygen levels well above what is now considerable uninhabitable, suggesting that the extent of dead zones in coastal areas in greater than previously known. Dead zones are caused by excess nitrogen from farm fertilizers, factory and vehicle emissions, sewage and other pollution runoff.
