Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow is a work of historical fiction set during the Progressive era – the age of “ragtime.”
What does the novel tell us about this historical time period? In 3-4 pages, briefly summarize the book, and choosing one of the following subject areas: race, the immigrant experience, or gender, explain what this novel reveals about the early twentieth century in regards to that subject in the United States.

This paper will be 15% of your final grade. Papers must be submitted on Canvas BEFORE class, as well as submitted as a hard copy in class.
Late papers will be scored at half credit. Papers will not be accepted after five days following the due date. Any plagiarized papers will receive a score of 0. If you have questions about what constitutes as plagiarism, ask.
Each paper is worth 100 points. Papers must be stapled, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and the correct font and size (Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica in 12 pt font).
This essay should not include sources outside of the text, your textbook, and information from lecture.
Papers should be 3-4 pages in length.
Citations should be written as Chicago Style footnotes.

Points will be taken off if your paper does not follow the required formatting and citation guidelines.
