Part 2

Chapters 11-12

Communication and Effective Leadership in Sport

A coach may achieve a winning record while athletes feel unheard, undervalued, or afraid to make mistakes. Chapters 11 and 12 ask us to consider how coaches communicate, exercise leadership, and support athletes’ development.

After reviewing both chapters and watching the following two videos, write an initial response of  at least 400 words, addressing the following  (10 points):

1. Communication and relationships: Identify one specific example from  each video that illustrates effective or ineffective communication or leadership. Explain how the words, tone, listening, or behaviors involved could affect athletes’ trust, confidence, and willingness to communicate. Include timestamps for your examples.

2. Successful versus effective leadership: Using Chapter 12’s distinction, explain whether a coach can be successful without being effective. Apply  one leadership theory from the chapter to an example from either video. Compare how  two coaching styles might affect the athletes in that situation.

3. Your coaching response: Imagine you coach a talented team whose performance is declining. Some athletes feel ignored, and others are afraid to question your decisions. Describe how you would respond using  two communication strategies from Chapter 11. Explain how you would use a team meeting or individual mentoring and identify one leadership trait or behavior that would help you rebuild trust while maintaining performance expectations.

Support your analysis with concepts from  both chapters and specific examples from  both videos. Go beyond summarizing by explaining why your proposed approach fits the athletes and situation.
