PSYC338 WEEK 4 DISCUSSION

REMEMBER: Please review the Respectful Engagement Requirement (listed on your syllabus as well as the main discussion page). Initial posts are due no later than Saturday 11:59pm ET and replies (2) are due no later than Tuesday 11:59pm ET each week.

For the first two sections of your discussion, make sure you've read the "moral development" section of  Chapter 5: Growing Up.

In 1 - 2 paragraphs, (1) contrast Freud's, Piaget's, Kohlberg's, and Gilligan's views of moral development. What gaps were there in each researcher's development of his/her theory?

(2) Head to the  library and search for more recent peer-reviewed research (within the last 5 years) in the area of moral development. I suggest using the following (or similar) search terms: psychology; moral development; gender. Choose an article that interests you and summarize it for the class (don't forget to cite it at the end of your post). Who were there participants? What was their methodology? What did the study's authors discover about gender and moral development? Does this research resemble that of Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, or Gilligan? In what ways? How is it different? This section should be no less than 2 paragraphs and please be sure to include key terms from your reading this week.

(3) In your own words, please thoroughly describe gender-based violence and discuss the impacts it has on both the victim and the community as a whole. (4) Based on your reading (as well as any external resources), what can be done to reduce gender-based violence? This section should be a minimum of 1 - 2 paragraphs.

Finally, (5) discuss the analysis done by Drs. Baumeister and Vohs regarding why people help others - please make sure to (6) include their discussion of gender and other individual differences. This section should be a minimum of 1 - 2 paragraphs.

In addition to posting your main entry, it is required that you respond to at least TWO (2) of your classmates' entries.  In 75 words or more, provide specific and constructive feedback that is directly related to their post. What additional thoughts do you have?  Share them.  When providing your feedback, present the logic behind it and, where appropriate, cite research to support your thoughts.

More on Peer-reviewed Articles

Peer-reviewed articles are vetted for quality and adherence to editorial standards and published in scholarly journals (such as the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology).  This link to the UMGC library provides excellent instruction, support and resources addressing scholarly articles.  Use the UMGC library database to find peer-reviewed articles.  It is your responsibility to make sure that the journal articles you select are appropriate. If you are unsure about the relevance of your articles, contact your instructor for approval.  The articles must meet the following criteria:

Scholarly – Articles should address an original research study, meta-analyses, summary, editorial or theory. Refereed – Articles must come from peer-reviewed journals found in the UMGC library. Social Psychology Connections – Articles must be relevant to social psychology. Recent – Articles must have been published within the last 10 years. For example, the following would be a relevant peer-reviewed journal article for investigating the influence of sleep in children.

Beebe, D. W. (2016). Sleep problems as consequence, contributor, and comorbidity: Introduction to the special issue on sleep, published in coordination with special issues in Clinical Practice in Pediatric Psychology and Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 41(6), 583–587.  https://doi-org.ezproxy.umgc.edu/10.1093/jpepsy/jsw037

Magazines, newspapers, and online blogs are generally not acceptable. For instance, Psychology Today would not be a preferred scholarly choice. If you are not sure, ask your instructor.
