Smith, T. E., PhD, Watson, A. L., EdD, & Polachek, G., PhD. (2017). Developing a Practice of  Cultural Awareness in Pre-Service Teachers by Promoting Positive Dialogue Around Diversity. Cultural Awareness and Competency Development in Higher Education Advances in  Higher Education and Professional Development, 223-236. doi:10.4018/978-1-5225-2145-7.ch013

In the article, “Perceptions of Cultural Competency and Acceptance among College Students: Implications for Diversity Awareness in Higher Education,” researchers studied a group of higher education students to examine their perception of how diversity and cultural acceptance was handle within their program. A longitudinal study was completed by administering 15 Likert scale questions to students in the Health Profession department. The questions were measured over the course of three years and sought to find the student’s perception of how successfully their professors demonstrated cultural competency, integrated diversity into the curriculum, and their overall belief of how the university dealt with diversity. The majority of the students involved in the study were white females; however, Enyeart Smith claims the sample group was an accurate representation of the diversity of the school. The lack of diversity in the sample group was a limitation to this study. Overall, a majority of the students believed that the professors were doing a decent job of modeling multiculturalism in their curriculum. However, a number of students remarked that they believed that talking about diversity was harmful and insisted that it was divisive rather than useful.

I chose this article because it focuses on a study of how multiculturalism in curriculum was perceived by students. I found it interesting to get the perspective of students rather than the educators who created the curriculum. The fact that it was a longitudinal study also spiked my interested because it measures the perspective of the sample group over time. While I do not plan on teaching college/master’s level studies, I believe that this article may be useful in order to get a better perspective of how having a curriculum that models multiculturalism may be perceived by my preschool/kindergarteners’ parents. In early childhood education, parent involvement is extremely important, I will need to devise a way to demonstrate multiculturalism in a way that is approved by both my students and their parents.

QIANQIAN, Z. (2017). Culturally and linguistically responsive teaching in practice: A case study of a fourth-grade mainstream classroom teacher. Journal of Education, 197(1), 33-40. Retrieved from http://library.capella.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ehh&AN=122322621&site=ehost-live&scope=site

The author of this article reports on a case study done on how to effectively implement  culturally and linguistically responsive instruction into a classroom . The case study was done on a fourth grade teacher in a US public school. Data was collected using interviews and observations and was analyzed using both a deductive and inductive method. The article reports on strategies that make implementation in the classroom successful such as caring, sensitivity to inequity, language scaffolding, awareness and accommodation, and teaching students how to develop their own voice. Such strategies helped motivate students, improve participation, and increase positive learning results. Further, the article details systems that need to be in place in order for the implementation of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching to be successful such as support and active involvement from one’s educational environment, joint efforts from fellow colleagues, and consistent and ongoing professional development that is geared towards increasing diversity and social justice within the classroom . Finally, the article discusses challenges faced when implementing CLR teaching such as resource shortages, lack of skill from students in the area of technology, and an absence of professional development opportunities for teachers to increase skills and knowledge in diversity and inclusivity, thus leading to the lack of ability to be able to adjust instructional practices to a variety of changing student needs. This study did not study how family and community involvement can impact the effectiveness of culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy.

I chose this article because it focuses on some great strategies to create an inclusive environment which I can apply to my future educational setting. Showing care, sensitivity, and having the ability to continually adjust your own methods to fit the needs of your students is vital. While I won’t be working with elementary age students, these strategies can be applied to students of any age to help facilitate an inclusive environment. Further, this article shows the importance of  belonging to an environment that is equally supportive of creating an inclusive environment. With proper support and active participation from other colleagues, an inclusive environment can become a possibility. It will be vital in my future environment to make sure I have the support of other staff and supervisors and that it is a collective effort. Finally, this article shows challenges that exist in creating an inclusive learning environment. I feel the biggest issues I will face in my future educational environment is a lack of ongoing professional development. This will be something I may need to seek on my own or encourage supervisors to provide in order to help me be an effective educational professional.
