School Drug Testing

Thesis: With the increased pressure to perform at a highly competitive level, the use of steroids

in secondary schools is becoming more common; therefore, schools have an ethical

responsibility to test athletes for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

I. Drug testing benefits the school.

A. Pre-season testing can deter students from conduct that will affect the school.

1. Steroid users seek opportunities to perform without detection and achieve high

goals (Byrd, 2010).

2. Testing for abuse of steroids prior to the beginning of the season is effective in

preventing abuse (Byrd, 2010).

B. Steroid testing maintains a school district’s reputation.

1. Steroid free athletes establish a positive and successful atmosphere for other

athletes and students (Crain et al., 2009).

2. Education is the best approach to successfully avoiding drug use of any form

on any school campus (Lundberg, 2012).

II. Steroid testing protects a school district’s employees.

A. Testing helps avoid other drug abuse by students, as well as protects the school

district staff by ensuring proper conduct.

1. School district employees have a moral and general obligation to provide a

safe campus and prevent harm (Johnson & Johnson, 2012).

2. Volunteers, custodians, cooks, and internet technologies professionals are all a

part of the school day and should factor into the testing parameters (Johnson

& Johnson, 2012).

Part 1

For this unit assignment, you will need to choose a topic based on an issue surrounding epidemiology.

The issue should be prevalent in your area, and you should be able to create research questions on your

chosen issue. Once you have chosen your topic, you will need to prepare a formal outline of your

preliminary research that includes the following components:

a) a title page; b) a thesis, which states your premise and also addresses why your chosen topic is important to

your community's health; c) your outline; d) and a references page with at least two scholarly references.

In your outline, include possible research questions that you could investigate. Make sure that your

topic, research questions, and references are all related to epidemiology. They should address the

following areas, as appropriate: epidemiology's scope and importance, goal and objectives, and historical

and modern applications.

Your outline must be at least two pages in length, including the title page and references page. Use APA

Style citations and references where appropriate. (SAMPLE OUTLINE ATTACHED)

Creating a formal outline is often the most difficult part of the research process; therefore, consider the

tips below as you determine your research paper topic.

a) Write down multiple research topics that are prevalent in your area, and then choose the one that you find most appealing.

b) Use personal or professional experience to establish a research topic. c) Ask your professor for guidance. d) Peruse your textbook for interesting topics. e) Review the course objectives and see if any of them spark an interest.

Part II

You will identify at least three peer-reviewed, scholarly articles based on the topic that you selected in

Unit Part I. At least one of the articles must be from the CSU Online Library.

After reading the articles you select, you will analyze them and write a formal literature review that is at

least three pages in length, not counting the title page and references page. Address each of the

following areas in your literature review.

1) Identify your topic and thesis. 2) Identify your research question. 3) Describe the source(s) of data that you will use to identify the population that you intend to use

for your research. 4) Explain the design that will be used for your study and why it is the best design for your study. 5) As they apply to your topic, discuss the following elements:

a) sources of epidemiologic health data for a population and b) characteristics of case-control, cohort, cross-sectional, and ecological studies. c) Surveillance systems of public health programming.
