• Discuss the effects of this decay rate on the soil organic matter (SOM) in forests.
• Identify the composition of soil organic matter in a forest dominated by maple species. Do the same for a forest dominated by oak species.
• Identify which species aid the recycling of leaf material. Explain what would happen if these species were absent.
