Measures chemicals in the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.

Significance of Findings:

Nuclear Brain Scan

Medicine

Scan

Brain scans show three things: healthy activity, too little activity, or too much activity.

Not associated with any long-term health risks.

To assess the brain for tumors and other lesions, injuries, intracranial bleeding, structural anomalies (e.g., hydrocephalus, infections, brain function or other conditions.

Not have anything to eat or drink for 4 hours before exam.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Radiotracers that emit single gamma rays to evaluate changes in blood flow and other brain abnormalities. The surface of a healthy brain looks smooth with full and symmetrical blood flow and activity. This tells us that the brain is working the way it is supposed to.

Significance of Findings:

Helps diagnosis cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, dementias, parkinsonism, etc..

Clinical Significance of Findings

Carotid Artery Duplex Scan

Definition:

Significance of Findings:

Computed Tomography, Brain

Radiology

Considered normal if the organs and structures being examined are normal in appearance.

Assess head injuries, severe headaches, dizziness, and other symptoms of aneurysm, bleeding, stroke, and brain tumors. It also helps your doctor to evaluate your face, sinuses, and skull or to plan radiation therapy for brain cancer.

Patient-based artifacts on the CT scan are caused by patient movement.

Reaction to contrast dye, contrast given through an IV may cause a slight burning feeling, a metallic taste in the mouth, and a warm flushing of the body

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

CT scanning of the head uses a series of x-rays of the head taken from many different directions; the resulting data is transformed into a series of cross sections of the brain using a computer program.

During a brain CT, the X-ray beam moves in a circle around the body, allowing many different views of the brain.

Significance of Findings:

Scans can provide more detailed information about brain tissue and brain structures than standard X-rays of the head, thus providing more data related to injuries and/or diseases of the brain.
