Nutritional status is a key element of overall health. Good nutrition is essential for every body system. Poor nutrition may be a problem (e.g., a lack of vitamin D can cause rickets) or exacerbate an underlying disease, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Low protein reserves will impede healing (e.g., from surgery). Poor nutrition in children may delay growth and contribute to cognitive issues in school. Problems with nutrition may result from many factors.
