Module 2: DQ1

Kishon

How do geography, demography, and the environment interact?  What is the importance of the ecological balance, pollution, and conservation?

Read Chapter 5 of the textbook to learn about Geography, Demography, Ecology, and Society.  Textbook: Social Science: An Introduction to the Study of Society.

Demographic challenges are in a state of constant flux: as societies achieve greater wealth, their population growth typically declines autonomously. Nevertheless, population-related issues are pivotal in the social challenges faced by many nations. While demographic issues generally improve as a nation becomes wealthier, ecological challenges frequently intensify. However, the affluence of society also provides the resources necessary to address these ecological issues. Whether society effectively tackles these problems remains a matter of political debate; often, despite the availability of resources, the political resolve is lacking. Social scientists investigate these challenges and develop alternative solutions that bypass political obstacles. Identifying a viable alternative is rarely straightforward, but such efforts usually enhance the understanding of the issues at hand and the potential solutions available.
