PART 2: Discussion post (115-195 words)
It is said that in Experiential Family Therapy, “the effectiveness of the approach depends on the person hood of the therapist.” What are the personality characteristics of a good experiential family therapist? Would you be a good fit for this approach? Discuss why or why not and give specific characteristics and rationale.
PART 3: respond to 2 students post (30-65 words)
Student 1: Experiential Family Therapy emphasizes that the therapist’s personhood their authenticity, emotional presence, and ability to engage deeplyis central to therapeutic effectiveness. A strong experiential family therapist typically demonstrates genuineness, emotional openness, spontaneity, creativity, and the capacity to form warm, authentic connections with clients. These therapists are comfortable with emotional intensity, skilled at facilitating expression, and able to model vulnerability in ways that help families access deeper levels of experience. Based on these characteristics, I would be a good fit for this approach because I value authenticity, emotional attunement, and intuitive engagement qualities that align closely with experiential work. My strengths in empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to connect meaningfully with others support the model’s emphasis on emotional presence. Additionally, my comfort with creativity and flexibility would allow me to use expressive techniques effectively.
These characteristics provide a strong rationale for why I could practice this approach in a way that is both ethical and therapeutically impactful.
Student 2: Some personality characteristics of an experiential family therapist are to include being a natural observer, authenticity, genuinity, openness, emotional awareness, empathy, and many other important characteristics. Based off the characteristics listed, I think that I would be a good fit for this approach because of three main characteristics that I have: empathy, genuinity, and openness. While I have many of the other characteristics of an experiential family therapist, I think these three are very important to have especially when working with couples and families. It's important to be able to understand the different emotions that will be presented in couple/family therapy. When talking about family therapy in specific with children, it's imperative that a therapist is open- minded and able to comprehend these types of complex emotions and situations, and I think that I have a strong ability to fit this. Other characteristics include attentiveness, presence, engagement, creativity, and confidence. I feel that I fit all of these characteristics and would be a good fit as an experiential family therapist. I think that it is very important to be able to have strong active listening skills and to be actively present in family therapy so that the clients can feel that they are being equally considered and receiving a full range of care.
