ED 622/SPED 625: Library Part 2

Name: Research Topic:

Purpose: To explore library research tools available, learn efficiencies, and practice utilizing tools through the SMSU McFarland Library to assist with your Master’s in Education research project.

Instructions: Review the following parts of the ED 622: Research in Education Research Guide ( https://libguides.smsu.edu/ED622): OneSearch, eBooks (including Using Books Tips), and Using References. Using what you’ve learned, answer the questions below.

Notes: APA: Please note that you will need to refer to your APA text for how to cite. On pages 313-316 in the APA Publication Manual, please find an index with the types of examples listed in Chapter 10. The number following the example is the place in Chapter 10 where you will locate directions and examples for the type of article, webpage, etc., that you need to cite. Please locate the example, look it over carefully, and apply accurately in your work below. You may also look at the APA resources I have provided.  An online site that is valuable is the Purdue Owl Online Writing Lab which has a section on APA.  Please view this site at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/ 

Assistance: If you have library search questions, contact a librarian through the access methods listed on the first page of the Research Guide. ALSO, START REQUESTING BOOKS YOU FIND THAT WILL BE USEFUL FOR YOUR RESEARCH. These books will be needed as we move forward with the research project. Happy Researching!

Use OneSearch (Use the OneSearch box on the Library Homepage or on the OneSearch page in the Research Guide) to answer the following questions:

1) You need to find books published 2020 or later about the topic of culturally responsive teaching. Conduct your search in OneSearch and use the necessary filters.

a. How many results did you get?

b. Skim the results and choose one book. List that book’s APA citation as provided in OneSearch. (The “ icon indicates the citation shortcut.)

c. If the APA citation is correct, note that. If not, correct the citation and list it here.

2) Clear the active filters in OneSearch. Then conduct a search in OneSearch relevant to your research topic:

a. What was your search strategy?

b. How many results did you get?

c. Use the filter to narrow to BOOKS (under Resource Type). How many results remain?

d. Provide the APA citation for one book.

e. If the APA citation is correct, note that. If not, correct the citation and list it here.

Use OneSearch Assistant to answer the following question: (See OneSearch Assistant box on the OneSearch page in the Research Guide for a demonstration video; Use the link at the top of the OneSearch tool to log into the Assistant) s:

3) Ask the OneSearch Assistant your research question or input your thesis statement.

a. What did you type in the box?

b. Did you use any limiters? If so, which ones?

c. Examine the 5 sources that were returned. Do they appear to align with your research topic? Explain.

d. Using the “View more results from your library search” link, indicate how many results are available in OneSearch.

e. Copy the search strategy that the Assistant pushed to OneSearch and paste it here:

f. How could looking at the search strategy AI used to generate results help you in your research?

Use the eBooks link (found on either the eBooks tab in the Research Guide or the A-Z Database List on the Library homepage) to answer the following questions:

4) In the eBooks database, search for an eBook relevant to your topic.

a. What was your search strategy?

b. How many results did you get?

c. Skim the list and find an eBook that might work for your paper. List the APA citation provided in the database for that eBook.

5) Scenario: When reading through some research, you’ve found references to two other sources you’d like to look at:
