  Read the excerpt from Mary Pipher’s Writing to Change the World;  annotate the her article and write a rough outline of the main points; summarize the article in one or two sentences (50 words) as an ASSIGNMENT by Sunday.   

Guidelines for summarizing a text:

state main ideas and key points simply, objectively, and accurately in your own words. Do not judge the author’s ideas; rather, you are required to understand the author’s ideas.  In a summary, put the author’s ideas in your own words.  A brief outline of the text helps before you begin to write a summary.

• First sentence:  state the author’s name, name of article, and author’s thesis
• Be objective; maintain a neutral tone
• Use the third-person point of view and the present tense:  Taylor argues…
• Keep your focus on the text.
• Put all or most of the summary in your own words.  If you borrow a phrase or sentence from the text, put it in quotation marks and provide the page number in parentheses.
