Creating a brick wall

From the course: Creating Dreamscapes in Photoshop: 3

Bert Monroy Digital Painter, Early Photoshop Adopter, Professor

Open blank file.

Open a new layer

Turn on a grid. View Menu/ Show / Grid

Draw a couple of bricks inside the grid using a brush

.

Turn off the grid. Fill the bricks

https://www.be-rad.com/2014/09/03/quickly-copy-objects-in-

photoshop/

Roughen the bricks up by using the brush and the eraser tool randomly

along the edges.

Select one of the bricks using the Marquee tool and move it over about

a half brick length . And make a copy of it.

At this point I need to divert because I don’t know how to make a copy

of a Ps object or selection. At first I tried exploring the menus. That led

me to Edit Menu/Copy then Paste but that actually created a new layer

along with the new copy.

I search videos in Linkedin and found the following:

Using the geometric Marquee tools

From the course: Photoshop CC 2017 One-on-One: Fundamentals

Deke McClelland Author, Educator, Image Editing and Graphic Design Expert https://www.linkedin.com/learning/search?keywords=copy%20from%2

0marquee%20tool&u=2337506

I found a lot of interesting shortcuts and Marquee techniques. But this

video actually makes use of the very same cut and paste while creating

a new layer technique. Finally I found this on line:

Quickly Copy Objects In Photoshop

https://www.be-rad.com/2014/09/03/quickly-copy-objects-in-

photoshop/

This article is a step by step guide on how duplicate the selected area in

the same layer:

1. Select the layer that contains image to be duplicated.

2. Select the part of the image to ‘copy’. Here the author suggested

the Magic Wand Tool ,”w”. However the original video I was

following appears to make the selection using the Rectangular

Marquee tool then switching to the Moving Tool , by pressing ‘v’

in the first instance. After positioning the second brick by moving

it slightly the brick remains selected.

3. Hold the Option key (Mc) or Alt key (Win) then click and drag the

selection/duplicate to its new location.

Finally the article reveals that the same result can be achieved by cut

and paste into the layer , moving the layer merging the layers. But this

seems like a lot of trouble.

So, back to the brick wall…by duplicating the brick twice and positioning

them in line with the originals we now have four in a row. After

roughing them up further with a smaller pixel width eraser tool and Flip

Horizontal ( Edit Menu/Transform/Flip Horizontal) to further randomize

and individualize the bricks.

Repeating the previous actions, not unlike laying bricks you eventually

‘build’ a section of randomized bricks in a wall including the offsets at

the leading and tail ends of the bricks ending in the same area.

Turn off the background to make it transparent. Select All. And Define

Pattern.(Edit Menu/Define Pattern) . Name the Pattern ‘Brick Wall’

Next create a new file add a new layer for the grout and fill it with a

drab gray color. Give it some noise.(Filter menu / Noise /Add Noise) for

texture.

Add another layer, then fill it with the “Brick Wall ‘ pattern just

created.

The pattern fills the layer repeated and seamlessly.

To turn it into an actual texture, first lock the transparency:

Then fill it with a deeper gray.

For more texture Add Noise to the bricks. Select bricks layer Add Noise.

Select the grout layer and add a lot more noise
