In August of 1619, the first enslaved Africans arrived in the American colonies when the English ship White Lion landed at Point Comfort (present day Hampton, VA). The arrival of these "twenty and odd" kidnapped Africans is the seen as the beginning of the history of slavery in the United States. In August of 2019, journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones launched The 1619 Project, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans in the American colonies. The 1619 Project is The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning publication that reframes American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of the American story. In 2020, Nikole Hannah-Jones visited The Daily Show with Trevor Noah to address questions related to the project. The conversation was captured in the video clip below entitled, “Reframing the Legacy of Slavery with ‘The 1619 Project.’” For this assignment, please watch the clip and write an essay on the information shared in the interview.
