Practical Application Assignment
Use the Marya & Weiss Ethical Decision-making worksheet tool
to analyze and resolve the scenarios listed below. Use a new worksheet for each scenario. Choose any 3 of the scenarios listed below to analyze. Each scenario is worth 25 points, so please be thorough in your responses and ensure you are meeting the requirements in the rubric.
Scenarios:
1. You live and work in Dubai, and provide in-home ABA services for families that are of Emirati descent. When you are in a family’s home, they offer you coffee. Typically, you would refrain from accepting anything as a “gift” as this could constitute a “dual relationship.” However, you cannot discount the cultural ramifications of doing so, as it is considered grossly offensive.
2. Ashley is done with her hours, and presents her form (verification) to be signed by her supervisor. In thinking it over, her supervisor indicates that she just does not feel comfortable signing off and does not see Ashley as ready for independent practice. She is sorry, but her ethics come first, and she needs to protect her own reputation and the field. Ashley’s forms have never been deficient and she was entirely unaware of her supervisor’s concerns.
3. You are a BCBA providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities in the state of MA. A family informs the team that they recently started using medical marijuana to manage behavior and increase attending behavior in their child. They are excited about what they saw over vacation and want to continue to use it. They have requested you to administer it mid-day while the child is in the clinic.
4. You are a BCBA working in a clinical setting. You have a culturally diverse team with one male member in the team. One of the parents has expressed concerns about the male individual taking their female child to the bathroom.
5. You have been subpoenaed by the court to testify about a child custody issue. You know the child well and worked with the parents for a long time. You have strong opinions about which parent was more involved, is more skilled, and is more able to provide what the child needs. It makes sense to you that you would share this information in court in the best interests of the child. You plan to provide detailed information about the parents’ relative involvement and differential skills.
