Description

The personal statement is essentially an argument, a document within which you express your desire for admission into both the school and the major and express your desire to learn and develop further in the field to which you have chosen. It is a type of initial pre-admissions assignment that requires you to demonstrate understanding of your special and unique qualities, explain how personal events and experiences have shaped and/or influenced your goals, and logically explore your interest in the field, detailing what you have learned and the insights you have gained because of your involvement.

The personal statement requires that you understand who you are, where you have been, where you are going, and how the educational institution might help you to accomplish your goals. Essentially, you are expected to demonstrate through writing how your involvement through work and/or study has reinforced your conviction that you are well suited for the field to which you have chosen. You will write a personal statement based upon the annotated bibliography, lecture, group discussion, and the writing prompt below.

Purpose/Learning Objective

Write the transfer admissions personal statement. Synthesize ideas into a cohesive discussion.

Requirements/Writing Prompt

You will base the development of your personal statement on answering the following writing prompt:

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field—such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities—what you have gained from your involvement.

Rubric

The total points possible is 50. You need at least four (4) paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. You cannot exceed two pages. The document must be double-spaced and formatted for MLA.

Introduction	Introduce yourself and your intended major. Use the university’s wording.	10 points
Body paragraphs	Discuss (25) and describe (25) your interest in the subject and your experience in the field. Base your discussion on the sample personal statement discussed in class. The link is available on eCampus.	50 points
Conclusion	Conclude your discussion, detailing what you have gained from your involvement in the field.	10 points
