ON THE JOB LEARNING! (TWO)

Your experiences MATTER, and these assignments are meant to help you

think about your role in school within the broader context of education.

OJL 2:

1. Interview 2-4 students and/or teachers at your site who have knowledge/experience related to your essay topic. You will include your findings in your final essay and an upcoming source chart.

2. After watching the video, “ Elements of an introduction and conclusion ”, write a 3 paragraph essay that describes your interviews and makes at least one claim.

3. Your essay should include an introduction paragraph, a body paragraph, and a conclusion paragraph.

You will be graded on:

Overall effectiveness of the introduction paragraph:

An effective introduction paragraph has a relevant hook that captures the reader’s attention, background information the reader needs to understand the essay, and a thesis that states the main idea of the essay.

Overall effectiveness of the body paragraph:

An effective body paragraph has a clear topic sentence, evidence to support the claim in the topic sentence, and strong explanation of the evidence. After reading an effective paragraph, your reader understands what you are communicating and sees how the information relates to the thesis statement in the introduction.

Overall effectiveness of the conclusion paragraph:

An effective conclusion paragraph restates the main idea/claim(s) in the thesis in a new way and leaves the reader reflecting upon the topic OR prepared to take action concerning the topic.

Grammar for clarity:

As a whole, grammar that is used effectively enhances the essay and does not make it confusing in any way.

Remember, In all your writing, your voice matters. Proofread for errors, and NEVER use sentence correctors, modifiers, or suggested rewrites in editing programs like Grammerly.

These take away from your voice and put you at risk of AI plagiarism.

“6 Reasons We Should See Students as Changemakers” / Michael Fullen

1. Students have never been more prepared to change the world around them.

2. Educators must be prepared to honor their desire to lead for change.

1. 1. “Students born since 2000 are different. No other generation has experienced as much fantastic technology, bombardment of innovation, ravages of a pandemic, awareness and immediacy of the planet and the universe, and uncertain and aimless futures.”

2. 2. “Changemakers are not isolated…Young individuals and groups, working equally with adults will problem-solve—and will have a vested interest in having good ideas stick…We have to give kids the opportunity and experience to get better at this transformational work. There is no better way to learn.”

Student centered classrooms are key to encouraging student leadership today that leads to community leadership tomorrow.

Classrooms should be centered on students because their lived experiences are often vastly different from those of their teachers.

To make sure our classrooms are student centered, students should have the opportunities to walk alongside their peers and teachers to problem solve. This way, the teacher is mentoring the student, and the student sees their own problem solving skills which encourages future leadership.
