topic under consideration for research. Its purpose is to create familiarity with current thinking and research on

a particular topic and may justify future research into a previously overlooked or understudied area.

****A literature review is more than just a summary of each article. It involves critically appraising the two articles and finding common themes, topics, etc. about the sentinel event. As you find those common themes among the two articles, then discuss those in the literature review. ****

A scholarly, research article is written by the scientist(s) who actually did the research WITHIN the last five years (unless it was a historic study). If a resource is greater than 5 years from publication, a discussion with faculty is necessary.

Introduction

The introductory paragraph serves the purpose to introduce the purpose of the paper and the topic that will be discussed. A concise definition of a topic under consideration (this may be a descriptive or argumentative thesis, or proposal), as well as the scope of the related literature being investigated. State the general findings of the review (what do most of the sources conclude), and comment on the availability of sources in the subject area.

Body Paragraphs

There are many ways to organize the evaluation of the sources. Chronological and thematic approaches are each useful example. For the purpose of scholarly writing, you should have clear topics or themes being discussed in each paragraph of the paper. Therefore, you should have at least two body paragraphs, one for each article.

Each work should be critically summarized and evaluated for its premise, methodology, and conclusion. It is as important to address inconsistencies, omissions, and errors, as it is to identify accuracy, depth, and relevance.

Use logical connections and transitions to connect sources.

Conclusion

Reflect critical thinking of your findings. The conclusion summarizes the key findings of the review in general terms. Note commonalities between works.

This section is the reviewer’s opportunity to justify a research proposal. Therefore, the idea should be clearly re-stated and supported according to the findings of the review.
