The story behind the image - Steve Jobs | Profoto

1-

Albert Watson is the man behind the iconic Steve Jobs portrait shot in 2006 during an opportunity to capture Steve for a shoot that lasted 1 hour. But while Albert only needed 20 mins to capture the essence of Jobs, Albert took inspiration from passport photos by using a basic white background and a close up shot he was able to direct Steve to look into the camera with confidence and after that the photo was set in stone in the history books as “The Steve Jobs” photo.

The photo was then used years later to announce the death of Steve Jobs on apples website on October 5th 2011 and with the end of Steve the photo left an imprint on many and those who use technology as it marked the end of an era. This photo was then used in Steve’s biography.

A photograph that has a great point of view shows a perspective that evokes a feeling that makes you feel as though you’re apart of it, As public opinion can impact the photo for the better or worse, people can get a feeling of something that cant be described in words so the voices of said people have an impact on the photo. Photos now at the present time can still be influential today. Technology has helped us when capturing images that can be influential as even cell with microphotography could be iconic as tech has evolved to capture things that were only a dream. I believe the next iconic image will be shot by someone young maybe an up and coming influencer who shoots and shares it to a blog.

Migrant Mother, Dorothea Lange, March 1936

An iconic image is a piece of art that holds your attention. It can leave a lingering impression in your heart and in your mind. The beautiful photograph named “Migrant Mother” taken by American photographer, Dorothea Lange, does just that. This photo depicts a mother looking afar as her three children cling to her. The subject of the photograph is the mother of the three shown, Florence Owens. She was a migrant worker during the Great Depression. Her worrisome yet breathtaking appearance grasps the viewers’ attention. This photo portrays a woman who is living in a brutal era of American History, longing for better days. Although she may look phased, she is surrounded by something beautiful, her three daughters.

This photograph is an amazing piece of American history. I find that this artwork resonates with me as I see my own mother in those worried eyes. My mother, a strong immigrant woman, who went through troubling times and still surrounded herself with her children. I have seen those worried eyes look past me as the troubles of coming to America crashed into our lives. Still, my resilient mother, blessed by Jesus, made a way to give her children the best of what life has to offer.

This photograph was created for an agency of the US Government during the Great Depression. Its impact spread far and wide. A great photograph’s point of view is the depiction of the activities and surrounding attributes of the subject pictured. It’s what the photographer wants to get across. The “Migrant Mother” has the point of view depicted of a woman struggling during the Great Depression. This point of view paired with public opinion can generate massive views and responses worldwide. Public opinion’s impact either make or break a photo. It depends on the message, feeling and familiarity it displays. This photo’s influence touches on the hearts of Americans and was able to be used by the US Government to launch FSA.

A photograph’s life can live beyond it’s intended era. This photo taken in 1936, still holds significance today. Technology has had its advancements since the 1930’s. The “Migrant Mother” was photographed using the Graflex press camera, a popular camera amongst photojournalists at the time. Using this camera granted the photo’s life to reach iconic measures. Being prepared with the appropriate equipment allows you to reach great heights when taking photographs. Now with the invention of the cell phones, the common cell phone user could be the creator of the next iconic photograph. With social media, like Instagram, the next iconic photograph has a new world stage that can be seconds away from being viewed as a new iconic masterpiece.
