Instructions

Assignment Directions:

1. From Chapter 9 & 10, ( https://openstax.org/details/books/introductory-statistics-2e) select ONE hypothesis testing problem (for example, a one-sample mean or proportion) and work them out in full.

2. In Excel, conduct at least one t-test or z-test (depending on the chosen problem) and record the test statistic, p-value, and decision.

3. Write a 200-word conclusion interpreting the result: what does rejecting or failing to reject the null mean in practical context?

Excel Directions:

1. State your null and alternative hypotheses in text.

2. Use Data → Data Analysis → t-Test: Two-Sample Assuming Equal Variances (or appropriate variant) if Analysis ToolPak is enabled. Or use built-in functions:

a. =T.TEST(range1, range2, tails, type)

b. For one-sample: compute t = (mean – μ₀) / (stdev / SQRT(n)).

3. Use =T.DIST.2T(|t|, df) or =T.DIST.RT(|t|, df) for p-value (two-tail or right-tail).

4. Compare p-value to α. Make decision.

5. Report test statistic, degrees of freedom, p-value in Excel, and interpretation in a write-up.

6. Use cell references for all calculations.
