Part 1: Unit Outcomes

Intended Audience: Trainee teachers or students of undergraduate education.
The three-unit lesson plan will expose future teachers to the concepts of inclusive
teaching and how theories of learning can be applied in lessons. Lesson 1 is centered around
basics of inclusion, diversity and equity in learning. Students investigate the actual classroom
situations and talk about obstacles to learning, and put the constructivist principles to work in
interactive dialogues.
Lesson 2 discusses the key learning theories, such as behaviorism, constructivism, and
social learning theory. Students do short case studies and collaborative activities illustrating how
these theories are used in instructional techniques (Navas-Bonilla, 1). This lesson has a focus on
active knowledge building and peer learning.
Unit 3 is focused on practice. Students create an inclusive classroom activity
incorporating at least one learning theory and meeting needs of various learners. They share their
ideas in a discussion board and get feedback by their peers, supporting social learning (Hunt, 2).
Access is facilitated in various ways of engagement, representation and expression.
Videos, readings, discussion boards are used to deliver the content to support various learning
styles. Different needs are taken care of by clear instructions, captions and flexible deadlines.
The activities will be culturally sensitive and flexible to learners with different abilities.
This unit is gradual in comprehending inclusion and translating theory to practice, thus
making sense and mastery.
