Week 5 - Final Paper

Dr. Krashen & You

Watch the video Dr. Stephen Krashen Plenary KOTESOL International Conference 2011. Take notes on all successful language learning strategies including the name of the strategies, how they work, and why they were successful. Select one to two ideas to support with further research (four to five full-text resources) and then create an interdisciplinary unit designed for English Language Learners (ELLs) that illustrates your selected strategy. An interdisciplinary unit is a series of thematic lesson plans that address or relate to more than one subject matter in student activities. The interdisciplinary unit should include three to five lessons. Do not forget to apply what you have learned in this course regarding oral development, group work, utilizing works of art, honoring diverse cultures, and encouraging the preservation of native languages.

Your Final Paper must be eight to ten pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your paper must include the following sections:

  • Introduction
    • Discuss effective language learning practices, and       summarize the Krashen video to set the premise for your interdisciplinary       unit.
  • Literature review
    • Write a review of the additional research materials       you have found, four to five sources, not including the textbook and       required readings.
  • Interdisciplinary unit
    • Design an interdisciplinary unit that contains three       to five lessons. Present this in any format. You may view the video, What       is a Lesson Plan Template? to help you generate a template.
    • Include at least one assessment.
    • Specify your grade level, and assume you have a       diverse target audience.
    • Include a link to any artistic or cultural resources       used in the lesson. These resources can be included in the unit or listed       on the reference page.
  • Conclusion
    • Describe how your interdisciplinary unit addresses       language development and ELL students’ academic, social, and cultural       needs

The key to an ideal interdisciplinary lesson is one where students are able to experience the learning in multiple ways from multiple perspectives. Review the recommended resources for more information on interdisciplinary learning.
