The case study is now a research methodology that's accepted across academia in most circumstances. Qualitative research generally is becoming more widely accepted because of the growing recognition of the value of context. That is, 'truths' are very likely to be subjective rather than objective and retain their validity only within the context in which they have reveled. This is a complex world. What defines the academic viability of the case study comes down basically to two factors: the rigor of the design, and the objectivity of the analysis.

Conclusions Finally, after the analysis, the researcher must figure out what was learned. That process is writing the conclusions and recommendations. This is the most important step - if there is nothing to conclude, why do the study? If there is nothing to recommend, of what value was the study? Conclusions & recommendations provide the value of research, and should not be overlooked or omitted.

So that, in a nutshell, is the case study methodology. It may sound complex. But if one takes a step back, it's worthy of note that almost everything is a case study. When someone asks you: 'How was your day?' - they've initiated a case study. The reaction papers from all the various classes that require you to depict a real-world circumstance: case studies. What defines the academic viability of the case study comes down basically to two factors: the rigor of the design, and the objectivity of the analysis. Using the methodology is inescapable.

Qualitative VS Quantitative Here is an example that illustrates the difference between the two:

Example: Smith is a running back in the NFL. On a given Sunday, he averages 4.7 yards per carry. HYPOTHESIS: Smith's average is significantly different from that of the running backs in the rest of the league. A sample is taken of running back performances and the mean and standard deviation are calculated. The analysis indicates that Smith's 4.7 average is not significantly different from the 4.5 average of the rest of the league and the hypothesis is dis-proven. That's quantitative research.

Two ESPN analysts are sitting around on Monday discussing Smith's performance. One observes that his 4.7 average enabled his team to dominate the opponent that particular week and so is one of the stellar performances of the weekend. Even though the analyst used the statistic to help make his point, he's still conducting a qualitative observation.

Quantitative research only happens when a statistic is compared to another statistic for the purpose of testing a hypothesis. Everything else, including using numbers and statistics in a narrative, is qualitative research.

Introduction: Case Study The first and most basic question when starting out in this course would be: "What is a case study, anyway?" Well, from the academic perspective, the case study is now a research methodology that's accepted across academia in most circumstances. The narrow, academic definition would be: a case study is analysis conducted on a bounded universe - that is, there are data elements that are included in the case, and data elements that are excluded from the case. According to Yin (2014), case study is applicable if the research questions involve the how and why. Case study is for the in- depth description of a social phenomenon. Emergency management, especially, its interaction with the people involved area social phenomenon.

It is the researcher's job to draw that boundary - to determine what is pertinent and worthy of analysis, and to determine what is not relevant to the analysis. This is important. An erroneously-drawn boundary - say one that leaves out a critical cultural consideration of a population, for example - can completely destroy a study.

Next, the researcher must determine what is already known about the topic. This process is called the literature review. The researcher can then decide either to validate existing knowledge, or to determine where current knowledge leaves off and develop new knowledge - both are valuable functions of research.

Then, the researcher must determine what data can be collected, and based on that, determine a methodology. Most research is qualitative - that is, it analyzes and draws conclusions based on descriptive measures. Some is quantitative, which means that numbers describing the study are gathered and analyzed statistically to determine if there are anomalies that are noteworthy.

Background Information During the duration of this class, you will be conducting a case study or case analysis of a major historical disaster of your choice. You may select any disaster you wish, with two caveats: first, that the disaster must be something that is new to you and that you have not analyzed previously in any other course; and, that you must be able to find sufficient published research information to be able to conduct a quality analysis. Please do not use this class to conduct a program or product review, or attempt to forecast and analyze a hypothetical future disaster. You will use the enclosed template to report your case analysis.

Final Project (Due at End of Week 8) The final project will synthesize the information from the course and focus on a problem you have identified in your community (or community of your choice) through your preceding assignments. This is your opportunity to develop a problem statement, perform a literature review, and devise a methodology of researching the topic of your choice related to the course. For specific paper instructions in form and content, please note:

ABSTRACT AIM To describe how case study research (CSR) was used inductively as an all-encompassing theoretical framework to examine learning in the workplace. BACKGROUND Case study research is a method with strong philosophical underpinnings which provides a framework for exploratory research in real-life settings ( Yin 2009 ). DATA SOURCES A study of five students' experiences of learning in healthcare environments to explore real-life contexts over the course of two years. The study was rich with empirical data, offering a pragmatic framework for learning in the workplace. REVIEW METHODS Observations, interviews and documents were used. DISCUSSION As a result of using CSR, the findings were analysed systematically and rigorously. Using multiple methods verified data and strengthened the significance of the findings. CONCLUSIONS This paper focuses on the strengths of using the CSR methodology. CSR embraces qualitative research methods in a rigorous and systematic manner. CSR has been applied to one example of research, addressing each step of the research protocol to use CSR to its full potential. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE/RESEARCH CSR enables real-life settings to be studied systematically and rigorously, offering examples of practice in nursing and education.
