For the First Required Paper, due on February 11th, you are to examine the tensions between the ideals associated with journalism in a democratic society and the business realities of the newspaper and broadcasting industries, as expressed in The Front Page, Citizen Kane, and Network. The paper should also deal with the following questions. In what ways is “good journalism” challenged by economic or managerial forces within the newspapers or broadcasting networks depicted in each of these movies? How might those tensions lead to cynicism about the role of journalism in society? Grading will be based upon: your critical insights in addressing these questions; your ability to tie-in these concerns with specific aspects of each film; and your ability to express yourself in a cogent report. It should be between 4-8 pages double- spaced (12 pt).
