The topics in unit 5 address types of power and how they should be deployed in a correctional facility, the process for developing and implementing a reasonable and effective use of force policy, challenges associated with emergency planning, and mock prison riot training. For this unit’s Complete assignment, write a comprehensive scholarly essay (minimum 1500 words) in which you analyze, explain, and apply these concepts in the context of a law enforcement organization. You must incorporate and cite, using correct APA citation format, at least four different scholarly research sources. Be sure your essay demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the READ and ATTEND sections from this unit. In-line citations must be used in the body of your essay, and all research sources must be fully cited at the conclusion of your essay. Correct APA citation formats must be used.

 

Suggested topics for your essay include how and when legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power should be used by correctional workers. What steps should be taken to develop an institution culture that supports a reasonable and effective use of force policy? What factors could work against implementation of the model policy? Planning for a full range of possible emergent events should be addressed. What are the challenges related to emergency plan implementation? How can a proactive leader overcome these challenges? Finally, is mock prison riot training worthwhile? Does this type of preparation create a mindset of first using a tactical response to inmate confrontations rather than defaulting to de-escalation?
