The Opportunity Atlas

Opportunity Atlas was created by Raj Chetty and Nathan Hendren from Harvard University and John Friedman from Brown University, which takes data from many different sources and compiles estimated children’s outcomes into adulthood based upon neighborhoods.

The data set represents 20 million people born between 1978 – 1983 (94% of the people are born within the dated range).

This assignment will allow you to analyze the economic opportunities and the chances of mobility in your own neighborhood.

You will collect data using Opportunity Atlas and create a narrative for your neighborhood.

Step One

Start by going to the website: https://www.opportunityatlas.org

Step one: Enter your current zip code or a zip code you would like to research. (You can not use zip code 33024 Pembroke Pines, FL. It will be used for the example.)

You will be able to see the median income per household in the zip code.

Opportunity Atlas states, “Neighborhoods where kids went on to earn lower average incomes are displayed in red; places where kids grew up to earn more are in blue.”

In the upper right-hand corner check the following:

All for Parent Income

All for Child Race

All for Child Gender

Assignment Question

With all the acquired data, creative a narrative of your selected neighborhood that explains income distribution, opportunity, and/or economic discrimination. (E.g., Are incomes improving or regressing for all groups or just some? Is there a large difference in income for gender? Could gender discrimination exist in your neighborhood after analyzing the data? Is there a strong case for income mobility? Were children of low-income parents able to improve their income or were they trapped in a low income? Did race play a role in income mobility?)
