Power in Relationships — Where Does It Come From?

Power can come from many different sources in intimate relationships. Having power does not necessarily mean that someone is controlling their partner. Instead, different sources of power may give partners greater influence over particular decisions, behaviors, or areas of the relationship.

Part 1. Choose at least THREE different power bases discussed in the Week 5 Part 5 lecture recording/slides. (42 points; 14 points each *3)

For each power base, complete the following:

1. Identify and explain the power base. Name the power base and briefly explain what it means in your own words.
2. Create or find a specific relationship example. Show how this power base could operate between romantic partners or spouses. You may use a hypothetical situation, a movie/TV example, a public/media example, or a general real-life situation.
3. Apply the power base to your example. Go beyond simply identifying the concept. Explain:

• Who has this source of power?
• What specifically gives this person power?
• What does the person want or try to influence?
• How does the power allow them to influence their partner?
• How does the other partner respond?

4.Explain the impact on the relationship. Consider what happens when this power is used. Does it help the couple reach a decision? Create an imbalance? Lead to cooperation or conflict? Could the effect change depending on how the person uses their power? Explain your reasoning.

Part 2 - Reply to at least two classmates’ posts with thoughtful comments. (8 points).
