Effective leadership is essential in addressing challenges in the workplace. Reflect on the characteristics you believe an effective leader possesses.

· Identify characteristics that you believe a leader should possess?

· Do you think leadership is innate, or is it a skill you have consciously developed? If it is developed, share how you have cultivated these skills.

Now, imagine you are a nurse manager of a unit that has experienced high turnover among newly graduated and newly hired nurses over the past two years. Preceptors have remained committed, but new nurses often leave despite a general six-week orientation for new graduates and a two-week program for experienced hires. Your Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) has asked you to address this issue.

· Describe specific staff development strategies you would employ as a Nurse Leader to identify and meet the educational needs of these newly hired nurses.

· Incorporate Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory into your response and propose the best educational methods for effectively orienting and retaining newly hired nursing staff.
