Reframing Reflection for making a difficult decision to set boundaries with a family member

After completing your Life Map, choose ONE of your five experiences to explore more closely.

You may organize your reflection as paragraphs or answer each question separately.

1. How did you understand the experience when it originally happened?

What did you think about yourself, the situation, or other people at the time?

2. How do you understand the experience today?

Has your perspective changed?

Explain why or why not.

3. What did reframing help you notice?

Identify at least one:

  • Strength
  • Skill
  • Resource
  • Lesson
  • Form of resilience
  • Area of personal growth
  • Different perspective

that you may not have recognized at the time.

4. Did reframing change the meaning of the experience for you?

Explain your answer.

It is okay if the answer is no.

Reframing does not mean that you have to feel differently about something that happened.

5. How could reframing be useful when working with clients?

Imagine working with a client who primarily sees themselves through their problems, mistakes, setbacks, or difficulties.

How could a helper use reframing to help the client recognize strengths or possibilities without minimizing the client's experience?
