Discussion Board: Conflict Theory in the Real World

Conflict theories argue that crime  and criminal justice are deeply shaped by power, inequality, and social  conflict. Rather than viewing laws as neutral, these perspectives  suggest that laws often reflect the interests of dominant groups. This  week, you will apply conflict theory to a current issue in the news and  evaluate what it reveals about crime, law, and inequality in the United  States.

Your response must address all four parts below.

Part 1: Identify a Contemporary Issue

Select a current issue in the news related to crime, law, or justice. Briefly describe:

  • What is happening
  • Who is involved
  • Why it is controversial
  • Include a  news link (or a few) to help others learn about the topic. Please use  reputable news sources, or websites with very informative summaries. Try  to avoid very clearly biased information.

Part 2: Apply Conflict Theory

Using concepts from Chapter 10 and  assigned readings, explain how conflict theory would interpret this  issue. You must use and cite at least two specific concepts, such as:

  • Power and inequality
  • Class conflict
  • Law as a tool of the powerful
  • Selective enforcement
  • Criminalization of marginalized groups
  • Economic or political interests shaping law

Explain:

  • Who benefits from the current situation
  • Who is disadvantaged
  • How power shapes outcomes
  • Cite the textbook/readings throughout your explanation

Part 3: Policy Recommendation

Based on conflict theory, propose one policy change or reform that would address the issue. Explain:

  • What the policy would do
  • How it aligns with conflict theory (How does the theory support this policy recommendation)
  • How it would change power dynamics or reduce inequality

Part 4: Realism and Limitations

Evaluate whether your proposed  policy is realistic in American society. Consider issues like Political  resistance, Economic interests, Public opinion, and Institutional  constraints. Do you think your policy is Likely to be adopted, Difficult  but possible, or Unlikely or unrealistic in our current society.  Explain why.
