Benchmark Crisis Intervention Plan Assignment Instructions

Overview

The purpose of this assignment is for you, as the crisis interventionist, to learn an organized approach when working with individuals in crisis and to be able to assess the neurological effects of crisis while establishing a sound preventative intervention approach.

In addition, you are asked to be able to critically evaluate newsworthy information in your community or nation to determine what constitutes crises. This challenges you to begin viewing the needs of individuals and communities through the lens of a crisis interventionist able to assess the behavioral expression of neurological distress.

Being a crisis interventionist means being someone open to recognizing individuals and communities in crisis, recognizing the threats, being equipped and ready to intervene. You will take the information from your text, knowledge from your experience in the field, along with other course work and apply it to a real-life circumstance that has been reported in the media.

Instructions

Format

· Current APA style (professional version)

· Title page and references; no abstract required

· 3 level I headings: Defining Crisis; Community Crisis Event; Treatment Plan

· Narrative format required; bullets and lists are not permitted

· Scholarly support is required for the first two headings (Defining Crisis and Community Crisis Event)

· Length: 4½-5½ pages

· Follow the template below to format your paper and each section. Please note, the template may reformat or view differently as part of the instructions document in Canvas. It is recommended that you download these instructions to Word to see the actual formatting.

Title page: format in current APA style per the Online Writing Center (found under the Resources tab in the upper left corner of Canvas) Template and Sample papers.

Defining Crisis

In this section you will clearly define what constitutes a crisis using the text, Crisis Intervention: Neurobiology of Crisis (Brooks, 2017). You will clearly and succinctly discuss the neurological of crisis and the risk factors associated to a certain crisis using your readings, class discussion and research. Write from the perspective that you are informing/educating the general public about the significance of crisis intervention. Length: 2½ pages.

Address the following APA formatted level 2 subheadings:

1. Defining crisis (¼ page)

2. Neurobiology of crisis (¼-½ page)

3. Risks factors of crisis (¼-½ page)

4. Signs of someone in crisis (¼ page)

5. Long term neurological affects to untreated crisis (¼ page)

Community Crisis Event

For this section, you will report on a crisis for an individual or community reported in the news (local, national, etc.). Personal experience and knowledge crises are not appropriate for this assignment. Research the very specific incident you choose and gather as much information as you can (this information will be used to justify the treatment plan you will formulate in the next section). Since this requires a new story and research, you will have sources cited and referenced in this section.

Examples of individual crisis incidents include rape, murder in which there is a reported witness, domestic violence, substance abuse related crimes, etc. Examples of community crisis incidents would include mass shooting, 9-1-1, bombings, natural disasters, etc.

You will have two (2) level II headings. Length: 1-1½ pages.

Crisis News Story

Describe the very specific crisis situation in a detailed, yet in a clear, concise and succinct manner. Report only the relevant and necessary details for this assignment and do so in your own words using paraphrasing and summarizing. Length: ½ page.

Crisis Explanation

Discuss the following:

1. Explain why the news story selected is considered as a crisis by definition.

2. Provide a clear and succinct summation of the situation for the individual you will be treating in the next section (the treatment plan), including:

a. Current symptoms

b. Current functioning

*You are permitted creative freedom to add needed symptoms and functioning details if these are missing in the news report(s).

Ensure your details demonstrate that you know what to look for in a crisis situation and that adequate detail is provided to justify the treatment plan you will present in the section. Write clearly, concisely, and succinctly. Report only the relevant and necessary details for this assignment. Length: ½-¾ page.

Treatment Plan

· Identify the individual client receiving treatment (ex. victim, survivor, perpetrator/offender, etc.).

· Develop your treatment plan using the treatment planners found in the assignment link in Canvas: Klott & Jongsma (2015) and Kolski et al. (2015) as guides.

· Keep in mind, the treatment plan must be SMART (see next main bullet point),

· Copy-pasting from the Wiley Treatment Planners without including SMARTs will result in deductions.

· You must individualize your treatment plan to the client.

· The plan must be SMART: client-centered, individualized, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-oriented, and appropriate for the client in the case scenario. Use the SMART resource found in the assignment link in Canvas.

· Both the counselor and client should be represented in the treatment plan demonstrating collaborative development.

· Five (5) problems are required: mental/psychological, biological/physical, emotional, social, and spiritual.

· You will only develop one plan for each problem. Do not add additional goals, objectives, and interventions for each problem.

· Format each problem as shown in this example borrowed from ICANnotes.com (n.d.).:

Sample Problem 1 (mental): Mary's anxiety has been identified as an active problem that requires treatment.

Goal 1: Mary will reduce overall level, frequency, and intensity of anxiety so that daily functioning is not impaired.

Objective 1: Mary will learn and practice at least 2 anxiety management techniques with goal of decreasing anxiety symptoms to less than 3 times per week

Intervention 1: Therapist/Counselor will teach and support Mary to learn and be able to verbalize at least 2 communication strategies that can help decrease anxiety to the point where anxiety will occur less than once per day.

· Length: 1-1¼ pages

Use the following template to format your treatment plan.
