Working Definition of Sustainability

To me, sustainability in the context of esports and gaming means creating a digital

entertainment ecosystem that can thrive long-term by balancing economic growth,

cultural relevance, and community well-being. I arrived at this view by examining how

global sustainability principles — such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) —

can be adapted to a rapidly growing digital sector, especially in a country like Saudi

Arabia, where national strategies (like Vision 2030) aim to diversify the economy and

empower youth.

In esports, sustainability goes beyond environmental considerations. It includes equitable

access to technology and opportunities, long-term talent development, gender inclusion,

infrastructure investment, and ethical digital engagement. These elements form the

foundation for a vibrant, future-proof industry.

Supporting Ideas with References

Saudi Arabia’s efforts in the esports and gaming space reflect a deep commitment to

sustainable development. The Saudi Esports Federation (SEF), launched in 2017, has been

central in fostering an ecosystem that promotes professional growth, international

collaboration, and youth engagement. One example is the SEF Arena, opened in Riyadh,

the largest gaming venue of its kind globally, providing not only infrastructure but also

Contextual Understanding

This discussion is set within the socio-economic and cultural transformation of Saudi

Arabia, where over 60% of the population is under 30. The government’s Vision 2030 is

actively reshaping the economy away from oil dependency and toward tech, tourism, and

entertainment. Esports is a strategic pillar of this change. It aligns with local culture —

where digital gaming is immensely popular — while also introducing global

competitiveness and professionalism.

Personal Reflection and Future Actions

Understanding how Saudi Arabia is embedding sustainability in its gaming and esports

development motivates me to be more conscious of my own role. As a student and

potential future professional in this sector, I aim to:

- Advocate for ethical and inclusive content creation.

- Engage in research or volunteer opportunities within SEF or Savvy to contribute to their

mission.

Ultimately, I see esports not just as entertainment, but as a tool for sustainable national

Interim Assignment and Final Assessment

General Instructions – Please read carefully

You are required to complete the assessment outlined below and submit your completed final document through the RKC Online Campus by the end of Unit 6. Your grade will be based 100% on this final document, to which you will also receive written feedback.

In addition, by the end of Unit 3 you must upload a paper that will consolidate your learning from the first three units and prepare you for the final assessment (see Interim Assignment, on the final page of this document). This paper will not be graded, but it is an important way of monitoring your progress and preparing you for the final assessment.

Your paper must have a clear structure and include:

· Cover page (an example is available to you in Induction/Unit 4)

· Table of contents (Table of tables/figures if necessary)

· A declaration of authenticity – confirming that you are the sole author of the assessment and that you have acknowledged all of your sources

· List of References cited in the text – you must use in-text citations to support your information and arguments and any work cited must appear in the References list at the end of the work. You are required to use the Harvard system for this.

You should read the criteria for assessment section below carefully to ensure that within your assessment you have addressed all of the issues for which marks are available.

Your word count, excluding cover page, abstract, table of contents and reference list no more than 3000 words in total. UoC have strict regulations regarding word limits – the penalties for exceeding them are set out in section 3 HERE

Final Assessment

The assessment in the module is by a portfolio, in which you submit various elements of your work through the course of the module, to help you provide a complete picture of your development and achievement.

Your portfolio should include:

· An analysis of the nature of sustainability and its importance to global economy, social wellbeing, and the environment of the planet.

· A review and evaluation of the role of stakeholders who influence the actions of businesses – you may choose more than one context to illustrate particular points

(about 500 words)

· A discussion and analysis of the role of ethics and morals in modern business practice – you may choose specific contexts to illustrate particular points

· USING CASE STUDIES OF YOUR CHOICE, an analysis and comparison of the issues faced and the actions taken by AT LEAST TWO businesses or organisations

(about 1250 words)

INTERIM ASSIGNMENT

The Interim, formative assignment will consist of an individual submission of about 500 words in the Class Forum (initially visible only to you and the tutor); this is not graded, and can be amended subsequently to form part of your final assessment.

After you have submitted your formative assignment you will be able to see other students’ submissions, and you are expected to make general critical comments (of both a positive and negative nature) throughout the forum discussions. The tutor will also give general feedback on these postings, and by participating in the asynchronous class forums you can gather continuous feedback that can be directly applied to your summative assessment.

For this formative assignment you are required to write about 500 words on YOUR understanding of the meaning of sustainable development in the context of your choice. This can be at any scale – from the global to the individual – and in any context.

The assignment must be submitted no later than 11.59 CET (Zurich) time on the last day of module 3

In these 500 words you should

· Provide YOUR working definition of sustainability – with an explanation of how you have reached this view

· Support the information you give and the ideas you use by references to appropriate sources

· Make clear the context of your discussion (in terms of country, culture, economic development, scale – as appropriate)

· Conclude with how YOU, in the light of your discussion, intent behaving in future.

It goes without saying that this must be your own work, due attention must be given to referencing the sources of your ideas and information – and remember that copying large sections of a source is NOT acceptable, even if you acknowledge its source.
