Constructing Data Files Unit 1 IP
In the real world, you deal with information from hundreds of people when attempting to understand a problem. Management frequently hears from a select subset of these people, who too often are not representative of the entire group. It is important for you to understand the dangers of these non-representative inputs as well as have a clear understanding of how to present a summary statement of everyone’s input when all people have had a chance to be heard. The key to providing such a summary lies in the concept of central tendency. Your usual choices are to select from a mean, median, or mode to represent a single value for the group. Equally important is the degree to which all members of the group agree. In quantitative methods, that leads you to the concepts of variance and standard deviation. Your task is to explain the 3 measures of central tendency and the concept of variance and standard deviation. Focus your discussion on the following:
- When might it be better to use one each central tendency approach over the other two?
When explaining your variance concept, presume that you have a small group of people who are in strong disagreement with the rest of the large group. Everyone’s opinion has been represented numerically by a score on an opinion survey. Answer the following questions:
- What danger is there in including the extreme scores in your central tendency measures?
- How will your variability scores change when you consider the group with and without the extreme reaction people?
