helpful information regarding citing legal decisions (keep in mind for the IRAC case brief).
In citing legal decisions, at minimum, you should include the party names and decision year (e.g., Gideon v. Wainwright, 1963). If you can find the case number or jurisdiction (generally the long list of numbers and jurisdiction information listed after the party names) feel free to include that in the reference list. As with all assignments, make sure to include a reference list in addition to information in the text.
For example-
Reference list- Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 US 335 (1963)
In text- Gideon v. Wainwright, 1963
This is the full citation for this decision- includes the party names, case number, jurisdiction ("US" = US Supreme Court) and the year. Sometimes this information is easy to find, other times it's not (you might not be able to find the case number, and jurisdiction might not be listed). Look in the footnotes of the decision you are reading for citations of legal cases the Justices reference. But, the party names and year will be sufficient.
