Re: The Outward Mindset

Dear Mr. Smith:

I have read and studied “ The Outward Mindset”, which has been under consideration for our upcoming leadership workshop. My findings have led me to believe that an emphasis on the principles outlined in the book will have a significant positive impact on our organization. I suggest that you review the following ideas that I have summarized in order that you may appreciate the value they will have for our employees.

The Arbinger Institute, the author of “ The Outward Mindset”, has a history of working successfully with big firms such as Staples and CenturyLink. A number of case studies have been done with these and other companies showing the effectiveness of their philosophy. The prevailing idea is that while an inward mindset seeks to advance one’s own agenda, an outward mindset procures the success of the group as a whole.

The book explains how the precursor to a change in outward behavior is a change in mindset. While a powerful leader may be able to effect some degree of behavioral change through motivating and micromanaging, these newly established behavior patterns will crumble without the foundation of a changed mindset.

I have scanned through several reviews of the book by people of various walks of life, and have found that many consider the principles discussed to be life changing and practical. One particular reader commented: “this one is based on real world examples from their practice AND focuses more on things the reader can do in his or her own environment.” After reading the book for myself, I agree with this statement and am excited for the way that our organization’s attitude and productivity will improve as a result of this workshop. My vision is that each employee will leave the conference with a mindset fixated on our common goal, and a behavior focused on others.

Sincerely,

Jake Oldroyd, Project Manager BYU Inc.

GEB 3213: Negative Business Letter

Assignment Scenario: Your company’s owner is excited about engaging in a philanthropy initiative, so she has told some people about it. Consequently, word has gotten out, and she has been contacted by a local nonprofit hoping to benefit from your company’s generosity. She asks you to write a letter to reply, “no,” to the donation request from a local hunger charity, the South Florida Hunger Coalition (notice it’s a real organization, so you can research it).

Content: Read the scenario carefully and use purpose, audience analysis, and your critical thinking skills to determine which content should be included. REMEMBER: Provide explanation/reasons and be clear; be respectful and be fair. ADDITIONALLY, think carefully about how you say it—phrasing and organization. Remember that your purpose is to deny the request but keep good will with a potential client.

MAKE SURE YOU CLEARLY UNDERSTAND YOUR ROLE AND WHO YOU ARE WRITING TO. REMEMBER WHY YOU ARE WRITING THIS LETTER.

Organization: The letter should follow the indirect organizational structure.
