Question
Here is the rest of your scenario based on Chapter 6:
When Gina asks the wife if she is okay when the client is rushed to the ICU with severe chest pain, the wife responds with “not really” and is shaking and fighting back tears. Sue is uncomfortable with the situation and observes how Gina responds. Gina is taking an online nursing research course and Sue asks Gina how she knew that the family member needed help with the situation.

- Gina’s belief in nursing knowledge is based on “hard science.” Nursing knowledge based on the “hard sciences” has its roots in which primary process of knowing? What is the definition for this process of knowing? What is the definition for the three primary processes of knowing?
- There are four concepts that have been commonly accepted as central to the discipline of nursing. Why are these central concepts important to professional nursing practice?

Chapter 6 Question 2
The four concepts commonly accepted as central to the discipline of nursing are human being, environment, health, and nursing. They matter to professional nursing practice because they describe what nursing is and what makes it unique (Hood, 2022). The concepts are what allow for nursing theories that guide professional practice.
When a nurse pulls from the nursing metaparadigm, the act of caring is what glues those concepts together, making it exceptional and professional care (Muñoz Devesa & Rico Becerra, 2026). In the scenario, Gina dealt with the emergency, which is part of her clinical responsibilities. Additionally, Gina is able to focus on the patient’s wife’s emotional response to his transfer to the ICU. Even when the patient will no longer be under her care, she finds a way to be emotionally available to the family and provide comfort. The care provided by Gina shows how the metaparadigm functions together in practice.
