As the world changes and living in America as a male who identifies as straight, I can see some of the acceptance and support that members of the LGBTQ+ have been receiving. However, we still live in a society that affords heterosexual individuals more rights, power, and freedom. Having a military background as well as law enforcement, if you were a part of the LGBTQ+ community, it was policies in place where you had to keep that information to yourself; hence the DONT ASK DONT TELL law. Other countries have imposed rules against same-sex couples. For example, Uganda passed a law in Feb. 2014 called the Anti-Homosexual Act (Haefele-Thomas,2019) if anyone involved in a same-sex relationship will receive a lifetime imprisonment (Haefele-Thomas,2019).

Growing up as a young child, being openly gay was unheard of. Did I know people that were, yes? I did not see my first openly gay relationship until I was in high school, and it was a lesbian couple. I have many stories. As a kid, the only stories I remember about homosexuality were that the acts were not godly, and those individuals were deemed hell. I have matured and learned a lot as an adult, and I don't believe that is true.

One of my favorite movies I remember watching was Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. This movie had at least five characters from the LGBTQ+ community, including the main character. Those characters were portrayed as least then or nasty. For example, the main character was one of the leading employees at his firm. Once they found out he was gay and had AIDs, they started to treat him differently. Many law firms did not want to represent him because of his sexuality. As a movie executive or director, I would start including more LGBTQ+ people in my show. Believe it or not, these individuals are a part of our community. Everyone has somebody in their family who is a part of that community. TV shows and movies sometimes portray real-life events. I would use that opportunity to teach others.
