Topic 1: Athletes and Intelligence

• Societal Assumption: Many people believe that athletes or jocks are not very intelligent.

• Personal Experience: You could write about a time when you excelled in a sport and also got good grades in school.

• Societal Assumption vs Personal Experience: Your chosen topic should be based on comparing and contrasting a widely held societal assumption to your own direct personal experiences, not just strong opinions or widely debated issues.

Elements of the Introduction

The introductory paragraph of your essay will include the following elements:

• Your Thesis Statement: This is the opening sentence of your essay that tells your reader what your essay is about. It should have  two parts: the idea people believe (societal assumption) and the idea you believe based on your personal experiences (overturn). A  transition word of contrast (but, however, yet, conversely, on the other hand, in contrast, etc.) will separate these two parts in your thesis statement.

• Three Assumption Points: These sentences further explain the societal assumption. They give details of the assumption and the reason the assumption is popular. Your introductory paragraph should have 3 main assumption points.

• Three Overturn Points: These sentences explain what you believe to be true instead based on your personal experience and gives an alternative view to reader. Your introductory paragraph should have 3 main overturn points. These elements combined will create a strong first introductory paragraph of your essay.

• Do not just copy & paste the main point sentences from your introductory paragraph to use in your body paragraphs. Change the wording up to make it a unique and interesting sentence.

Elements of the Body Paragraphs

Your essay will have 6 body paragraphs:

• The first 3 paragraphs will talk about the  societal assumptions, the ideas that many people believe about your selected topic and why they believe them.

• The last 3 paragraphs will talk about your  overturn points, the ideas that you believe about your topic and the personal experiences that led you to see this alternative view of the topic.

Each of your 6 body paragraph will have:

• topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph

• supporting detail sentences with specific examples as proof of your point

• logical, coherent thoughts that are developed in order from one sentence to the next

• a concluding idea that wraps up the point of the paragraph
