One key to learning effectiveness is proper assessment of the attainment of learning objectives. Absence of assessment leaves the instructor wondering whether students have benefited from the instructional materials and overall lesson. In order to properly give learners feedback, concrete measures of progress towards learning objectives are essential.

Well-designed assessments offer a balanced approach based upon multiple levels of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy. Assessments come in many shapes and forms. Traditional assessments include discussions, multiple-choice questions, projects, reflections, and the development of knowledge portfolios. Regardless of type, all assessments should relate to predetermined learning goals.

Equally important is the design of rubrics, which allow students to calibrate their attainment of learning goals. A well-designed rubric includes multiple categories that indicate what a student needs to do to demonstrate proficiency on a learning objective. Rubrics should include multiple levels of proficiency so students know specifically what it takes to demonstrate a competency. You should always be able to articulate why your rubric is an appropriate assessment of the objectives for that lesson.

For this part of the assignment you are required to:

  1. Create and describe a formative assessment:
    1. What aspects of the lesson require formative assessments?
    2. Why is this assessment appropriate for this lesson?
    3. Which objectives are assessed in each aspect of the formative assessment?
  2. Create and describe a summative assessment (for example, a post test or project description) :
    1. What aspects of the lesson require summative assessments?
    2. Why is the assessment appropriate for the lesson?
    3. Which objectives are assessed by the different parts of the summative assessment?
  3. Design, create, and describe the rubrics and articulate grading:
    1. What aspects of the lesson/assessment require a rubric(s)?
    2. Which learning objectives are assessed by each part of the rubric?
    3. How will grades be determined?
