Rent and watch the movie, The Great Debaters (2007).  (The movie can be rented through Amazon by clicking here.)

While watching the movie, complete an analysis based on the concepts from this course (approx. 1-2 per chapter). Locate twenty (20) examples of character interactions and behaviors which exemplify messages of persuasion such as one character persuading or being persuaded by another.

Example:  IOU Tactic of Persuasion—Dr. Farmer tried to persuade the sheriff to let Professor Tolson go by bringing up the fact that the sheriff led a raid, which meant that he broke the law.  Coupled with that, there was also a Cause and Effect Line of Reasoning—Dr. Farmer then stated, “I believe that if you let Mr. Tolson go home (cause), those folks outside will go as well (effect).”  The sheriff complies by letting Tolson go, which defused the anger among both Blacks and Whites of the town.

Characters:

            Samantha Booke                      Henry Low

Dr. Farmer                               James Farmer (Junior)

            Professor Tolson                      Hamilton Burgus
